Hope. Love. Home. Sanctuary.

This isn't just a tagline.

For Negra, it's a new reality.  At her sanctuary home, Negra can look forward to the pleasures that each new day will bring. She has her favorite foods, comfortable nests of blankets and straw, and the warmth of the afternoon sun. She has a family of chimpanzees for grooming and playing and a growing group of humans who care for her. The sanctuary is a place where her needs come first. At Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, Negra can finally enjoy being alive.

There was a time when Negra had little reason for hope. The records we have indicate that she was captured in Africa as an infant in 1973. She was brought to the United States and put into biomedical testing. She spent the next three and a half decades living in small cages, being poked and prodded, at one lab or another. She had at least three children taken from her, some just minutes after birth.

We can tell from scribbled notes in her file that she was in complete isolation, solitary confinement, between March 31, 1986 and January 14, 1988 because one of the labs thought she might have an infectious disease. This turned out to be a mistake. The notation on 1/14/88 is, "Enter cage #28. By herself. Home again."

Thanks to the support from people like you, cage #28 will never be Negra's home again.

We have chosen to celebrate Negra's birthday on June 13th, the day that the chimpanzees arrived at their sanctuary home. Today I am asking you to make an extra gift in honor of Negra and to think of ways that you can help us raise a total of $45,000 by June 13th (we're well on our way, already!) The first $30,000 raised will go towards our day-to-day expenses, but we'd like to give the chimpanzees a little more. They have been thrilled with the replacement of a cage door with chimpanzee-proof glass that lets in more light and allows them to interact in new ways with caregivers.

We are going to soon replace three of the twelve windows in the playroom with glass, but if we raise $35,000, we'll add one more window replacement and $45,000 will enable us to replace three more caged windows with chimpanzee-proof glass.

Help us bring even more sun into Negra's life. Give today and keep tabs on the fundraising progress on our website.

Hope. Love. Home. Sanctuary. Help us continue to provide this for Negra and all of the Cle Elum Seven chimpanzees,

Sarah Baeckler, JD
Executive Director
