Young's Hill Progress

It's spring in Cle Elum which means we're getting busy on Young's Hill! We hope to be have the 2-acre habitat complete and the chimpanzees on the hill by the end of August.

Below are a couple of photos of work done last week.

This view is taken from further up on the hill with the chimp house looking small on the left. The square outline is the trench that was dug and filled in with gravel for the primary fence:

Digging the trench resulted in a lot of leftover topsoil, which was used to make two sets of large mounds. Logs connecting the mounds are from trees the electric company cut down last year. The sets of mounds add some visual and spatial interest to the hill. We're all picturing the chimps playing chase around them, especially Missy, who loves to leap and run.

The future habitat is possible due to a very generous donation from Karen and Don Young and funds raised at the 2010 Out of the Box auction, including a large challenge donation from Euan and Bethany Menzies. A big pant-hoot thank you to all who have contributed!

Speaking of chimpanzee vocalizations, watch this video of Burrito reacting to a caregiver laughing chimpanzee-style.

On a more serious note, a set of well researched articles about the use of chimpanzees in biomedical research was recently published in McClathchy. Please read the articles by Chris Adams here: www.mcclatchydc.com/chimps.
